A very warm welcome to Year 4's class page!It is a strange start to the year for us all but we hope that you have managed to have a good summer and have lots of quality time with your families.  

Our class teacher is Miss Dwyer and our fantastic teaching assistant is Miss Appleton. 

 

Year 4 will start school at 8.40am and will finish at 3pm

Curriculum information

Topic

Our learning this term is inspired by our Topic "Ancient Greece" and will focus on the the Olympics

English

 

 

 

 

Our starting text this term is ‘Counting on Katherine’ by Helaine Becker, which is a great text that will help to prepare us for our new learning in Year 4. We will read the story and explore inclusion and diversity in the classroom. We will then be moving onto ‘Gorilla’ by Anthony Browne, whilst learning about the fantastic charities that are helping to protect wildlife. 

Maths

This half term we will be focusing on: Number and Place Value and Addition and Subtraction. We will begin by spending time on numbers within 1000 to ensure we are secure before moving on to exploring within 10,000. 

Routines in Year 4

P.E

This term we have Gymnastics on a Thursday afternoon with Beth Tweddle coaches and Cricket Coaching outdoors on a Friday afternoon. Please can children come into school wearing their PE kit, ensuring children are in weather appropriate clothing.

Swimming

Weekly Swimming lessons for Year 4 and 5 will start on Monday 21stSeptember 2020 until the end of the term. Boys should wear trunks or shorts that sit above the knees; girls should wear swimming costumes and not bikinis. 

Forest School

Children will have a series of Forest School sessions during the term. Your child will need suitable outdoor clothing such as a named waterproof coat, hat, gloves and wellington boots from the beginning of the academic year. Children are to wear appropriate outdoor clothes to school (not their uniform) for the whole day, bringing an additional pair of shoes to wear indoors.

Homework

As part of their homework, all children are expected to read 5 times per week. Please try to read as much as possible with your child and remember to sign their reading record tevery day to help them reach the GOLD star on our class 'Star Readers' chart!

Alternating Maths and English homework tasks will be set on Seesaw on a Wednesday and are to be completed and returned to school by Monday.

Spellings

In class, we will be focusing on learning the Year 4 spelling patterns. Spellings will be set on Spelling Shed on a Friday to practice at home, in preparation for a weekly spelling test the following Thursday. Please ensure that your child is learning their spellings throughout the week.  

Multiplication Tables Check

In June, Year 4 will be participating in the new standard Multiplication Check. This will test speed as well as knowledge. All children have a login for times tables rockstars and mathletics inside their reading records, these games are a fun and interactive way for children to practise their times tables and other mathematical skills. Please encourage your child to use Timestables Rockstars.

  • Newsround - Brilliant way for children to keep up to date with fun facts, stories and bulletins. 
  • BBC Bitesize - Lots of information covering a range of exciting topics.
  • National Geographic Kids - A great way for children to discover facts about the planet, along with interactive games and competitions. 

KEY POINTS TO NOTE:

  • Please bring in a waterproof coat as we will be encouraging the children to go outside lots!
  • Please remember that your child will need a bottle of water to have in class. 
  • Belongings: Please make sure that all of your child’s belongings (especially jumpers and cardigans) are clearly labelled.
