Welcome to Year 5!

Mrs Moss

Mrs Ellis and Mrs Estcourt

We have lots of exciting events and activities to look forward to this year.

I hope you find our class page useful and have a look at our topic web to see what we are up to this half term!

During the Autumn term, we are going to be learning about where and why the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings invaded Britain.

In science we will be looking at Animals including humans and how their bodies change with age.

I have attached a topic web for this term so that you can see the learning journey that your children will be taken on.

In Literacy, we will be reading 'Queen of the falls' by ChrisVan Allsburg and then 'The Lost Happy Endings' by Carol Ann Duffy.

In guided reading will be linking the text to our topic Rebels,  reading 'Goodnight stories for Rebel Girls' by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo.

lost happy endings

We are very lucky in Year 5, as part of a music inititatve will have the opportunity to learn a variety of instruments. Our lessons will take place on a Tuesday afternoon so please make sure you have your instruments in school!

Please try to read daily but at least three times a week and make sure you fill in your reading diary, even if your child is reading to themself. Your reading diary needs to be in school everyday.

Homework will be given out on a Wednesday and I will expect it back the following Tuesday. In addition to the weekly pieces of homework, I am going to set a creative topic based piece.

Spellings will be given out on a Friday and need to be practised, ready for a test on the following Friday.

Times tables and Minute Maths will also be tested twice per week.

Mathletics  tasks will be set on a regular basis and need completing. Your login in is stuck inside your reading diaries but if you can't find it, please come and ask me for it. I will be checking that these tasks are being completed.

Useful Information

We will have swimming on a Monday and gymnastics on Thursday, so please make sure you have your kits in school on these days (though it is useful to have it in school everyday, just in case). Please could you make sure your child has a named water bottle in school with them everyday.

Finally, if you have any worries, concerns or general questions, please feel free to come and see me at the end of the day once all of the children have been dismissed and I will be happy to discuss these with you.
