St Chad's Church of England Primary and Nursery School

Welcome to our wonderful year 6 class. Our teacher is Mrs Speed and our amazing teaching assistant is Miss Matzen.

Year 6 start school at 8.50am and finish at 3.10pm.

Darwin's finches

This term our learning is inspired by our topic:

 'Seed of Change'

We will investigate the question:

How has our world changed over time?

We will be reading "The Selfish Giant" by Oscar Wilde in our English lessons and will create our own stories and hybrid reports about giants. We will then move on to explore “Islands”, which help us to learn more about Charles Darwin’s work as a scientist. We will be writing journalistic reports and discussion texts.

In Maths this term, our learning with continue to focus on fractions, decimals, percentages and ratio. Later in the term we will focus on shape, space and measures.

In our Science lessons, we will be focusing on animals including humans. We will be exploring how animals are classified, including understanding the Linnean system. Also we will learn how animals adapt and evolve over time, with particular focus on the work of Charles Darwin.

In our Geography lessons this term, we will be exploring a variety of different biomes and the impact climate change is having in these areas. In DT we will be inventing our own animals which are adapted to one of the biomes and will make a wooden automaton model.

Here are some of the books we will be reading during our English lessons.

This year, homework activities will be uploaded to Seesaw on a Tuesday to be completed the following Monday. Children will be given alternating pieces of Maths and English each week, and a set of spelling to learn. This will often be set using Sats Companion.

Remember, you should also be aiming to read everyday and don't forget to log into Timestable rockstars, Mathletics and Spelling Shed using the links below.

Our PE lessons take place on Wednesday when the class will be taking part in Gym/Dance sessions. Also on Friday when we will learning hockey skills. Children should wear their PE kit to school on Wednesdays and Fridays. Please also make sure that your child has a water bottle in school. As we currently have a later lunch, it would also be helpful for them to bring in a healthy playtime snack or order a school snack on Monday for the week.
