🌈Welcome to YEAR 1🌻
Teacher: Miss Cross
In Year 1, we nurture curious, confident learners who are excited to explore the world around them. Through engaging experiences, meaningful relationships and high expectations, children develop the knowledge, skills and values needed to flourish as individuals and as part of our school family.
Want to see what you will be learning in Year 1?
Have a look at the curriculum map below which show the curriculum content and topics for each half term.
It includes the key topics, skills and knowledge for each subject.

Phonics in Year 1
In Year 1, we teach phonics every day through whole-class lessons using the Floppy’s Phonics programme. Phonics helps children develop the skills they need to become confident, fluent readers and writers.
In June 2026, all Year 1 children will take the Phonics Screening Check. This short assessment consists of 40 real and pseudo (alien) words and helps us assess children’s ability to recognise sounds and blend them together to read unfamiliar words. When reading at home, encourage your child to say the sounds in a word and blend them together to help build their confidence and fluency. Regular reading practice at home makes a huge difference and is one of the best ways you can support your child’s learning.
Reading
At St Chad’s, we believe that reading opens the door to a lifetime of learning, imagination and enjoyment. We strive to foster a love of reading from an early age and encourage children to explore a wide range of books, stories and authors.
Our classroom library is filled with exciting fiction and non-fiction texts to inspire every reader. Whether your child enjoys adventures, facts, picture books or poetry, there is something for everyone to enjoy. If your child has a favourite author or genre, please let us know. We would love to help them discover even more books they’ll enjoy
