At St Chad’s C of E Primary School, staff, governors, children and parents work together in partnership to create a warm, caring, family atmosphere in which all pupils flourish and achieve.
Personal development is at the heart of all that we do. We develop outward looking pupils who have the tools to communicate effectively and have a strong understanding of themselves, the wider community and the wider world. A range of additional opportunities enrich learning taught from Early Years and through to year 6. We help pupils develop their own character, to know that individual differences should be valued, to be resilient, reflective, to have empathy and respect for one another.
At St Chad’s, Christian and British values permeate throughout the curriculum and school ethos developing and deepening pupils’ understanding of the fundamental values of democracy, individual liberty, the rule of law, mutual respect and tolerance. We promote equality of opportunity so that all pupils can thrive together, understanding that difference is a positive, not a negative, and that individual characteristics make people unique. As a school, we promote an inclusive environment that meets the needs of all pupils enabling them to flourish to their full potential.
As part of our learning at St Chad’s staff, parents, pupils and governors have chosen some key characteristics which we develop throughout the curriculum.
Cultural Capital
Our Cultural Capital calendar is designed to enhance and enrich pupils’ learning experiences across the curriculum. Each year, trips and visits are evaluated and reviewed ensuring we provide the best experiences for our pupils. Additionally, the calendar is updated during the year with any additional exciting opportunities that may be available to St Chad’s.
Every year to allow the development of cultural capital, all Year 6 children have the opportunity visit York. Here, they are immersed in the culture and history of a famous city. They visit the York Chocolate Story, Dig, Jorvik, The York Dungeons, have a cruise down the River Ouse, experience a theme park with the longest roller coaster in the world, take part in hands on workshops and an animal handling session, the also enjoy ten pin bowling and a ghost walk through the city. This provides an opportunity to experience a historical and cultural city very different to their home town.
In Year 5, children enjoy a night of camping at Gulliver’s World. For many of our children, this is their first time camping out! During their visit they enjoy a wide range of design technology challenges, including cooking a meal. They also have chance to experience the theme park on their last day.
Our Year 4 children enjoy a residential visit to Wales where they get to challenge themselves with a range of outdoor, adventurous activities including abseiling and climbing, archery, kayaking and canoeing, zip wire and ropes, raft building and problem solving.
Year 3 is the first time our children stay away overnight, as we feel this is the age all of our children will feel more confident about being away from home. They enjoy time spent in Llandudno enjoying the seaside experiences of the pier, the arcades, fish and chips, beach games and art. They also have chance to extend their learning from their history topics by visiting an Iron Age Village.
Visits and Visitors
To enable children to fully understand a topic, we know that first hand experiences are the best way to learn. We try to provide children with carefully planned school trips and experiences through visitors in to school wherever possible. For example, when Year 2 learnt about the Great Fire of London they visit Nantwich museum to learn about the fire there. Historical knowledge is enhanced in Year 1 through a “Victorian School Experience Day” in school . In Year 4, children take part in a Greek Workshop and engage in different mythological stories through drama. In Year 5, children work with Chemistry With Cabbages to explore different science experiements.
